(Northern Song) Guo Xi, Early Spring Scene (detail)

In traditional painting methods, because interpretive vision was valued over realistic drawing, vision became the soul of Chinese painting. ” The conception is before the brush, and where the painting ends the conception is still present”; ”there is feelig in the landscape, and there is landscape in the feeling.” This picture consists of panoramic upward, outward, and downward distance. It is a representative tripartite composition, a magnificent trearment of high mountains and great chasms in the early spring.

Conclusion of my CRP draft

In conclusion, for my theoretical study, I have already found my method of digital media and new perception that can be applied to traditional painting. However, I have to carry out further exploration on the content and narrative. With the development of cities, the night in cities become polish and the view changes fast. Weather is a universal thing that is quite meaningful in city. Bad weather is also beautiful followed the change of the city zone. Consequently, I concentrate on finding how to present the relationship among sky, water and weather in city and trying to find previous theoretical practice to support this issue.

Introduction of my CRP draft

Introduction

This essay will roughly talk about the Critical Research Paper.  The theme of my project refers to New perception to present Chinese traditional painting (by digital media), which is divided into three parts  in my research. Firstly, Chinese traditional painting means the traditional ink painting (especially the black ink painting) in current researches. The second part is digital media, during which my interesting and initial point is presented, i.e., how to present traditional subject (or concept) by using digital media. My interest lies in the new digital media technology and the media used in my experiments is photography. Then filmmaking will be discussed in next stage. The last part is new perception whose definition in this essay does not involve the difference of  perceptions between the West and the East, for which is not my interesting and initial part. However, in this essay, I will concentrates on how to find a new perception or direction of appreciating and using traditional things. Additionally, I aim at finding a contemporary technique of expression to present traditional thing.

The first section of this paper will identify two key texts, one of which is Chinese traditional painting & digital media (Digital media mentioned here not only relates to the new technology but also the media theory). The article Media Hot and Cold from the book Understanding Media written by Marshall McLuhan in 1964 presents the following the points:

Ÿ the media is human extensions

Ÿ the medium is the message

Ÿthe distinction between hot media and cold media

In my opinion, the point the author discussed depends on the definition in images and audience involvement and Chinese painting is a very cold media. For the audience, it is of low definition but high participation or completion. On the contrary, photography and film are hot and digital media in this chapter. In addition, in the chapter Comics of the book Mad Vestibule to TV, the author claimed how comics impacted culture as a cold media and how it became the content inherited by the invention of TV, photography and film. The reason why this text is chosen is that the topic of Chinese art and painting is so broad that people can be confused easily. Thus, it is necessary for me to think about my initial idea, develop my own theory in digital media and try to apply  Chinese traditional painting. This book is a good instruction for researches. My initial idea is derived from a traditional painting presented by a big digital scroll in the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympics, and it is interesting for me to figure out how cold media can transfer into hot media.

The second key text is new perception & narrative. Chinese traditional painting is a historical treasure that we inherit from our culture. Although it was nearly lost, now it is revived by design and application. The definition of new perception means the author tries to find out a new visual perception or experience to present Chinese traditional painting. This project can explore both my Chinese aesthetics and cultural translation by translating European views. On the one hand, I centers on the atmosphere created by authors and the landscape in painting, which includes the weather and nature of landscapes which connect to the aesthetics quality. On the other hand, I  explore how pictures in art do in the aspect of atmosphere. Narrative means the content of my work, the message I want to convey as well as the development of the new perception. My current research pays attention to what practical issue I can use to present my perception by referring to the book Narrtives in Popular Culture, Media and Everyday Life, which talks about the definition of narratives and reasons why it is so important. The reason why I chosen this book is that it adopts the theory of Hot and Cold media to discuss the importance of narrative.

Landscape experiment 2

There is not too much content in the No.1 experiment. I only got the format but I did not find what message I want to convey. So from the second experiment I tried to put some message inside.

The topic of this experiment is the relationship between nature and city. The space between river and sky. Because the mountain and river were always presented in ink painting, the building in the city can be the mountain.
So I took a boat from Westminster to Greenwich and took the photos for the building in the riverside.

The weather reporter said that day was a fog day and that is why I chosen that day to go out, but it was not a fog day actually.

Then I learned from the case study by Yang Yonliang and try to create a city landscape by computer.

This is a scroll like the format of Chinese traditional painting. And in this experiment I put my personal experience inside.
Before I came to London, I lived in Shanghai 4 years. Shanghai also has a river cross the city, so I compare those two cities landscape.

But the topic in this experiment still too empty. My next stage will explore what message I want to communicate. Relate to my theory study, I have already found my method of digital media and new perception that can apply on traditional painting. And the content and narrative is I have to continue explore.

The topic in this experiment began with the exploration of the river and weather related to the city. The message I wanted to convey was the city view changed with time and weather and the important meaning of river in city, especially in big cities. The first shortage of this experiment was that it was difficult to recognize which city it was because the landmark of London was not clearly enough in my processing. Meanwhile, the second shortage was that the communication of this experiment was not good, audiences got confused about what information this work wanted to convey. The third one was that  the content of this work was not enough and interesting. While I succeeded finding another media to present the topic of my project and obtaining more relationship between it and my theoretical research.

Yang Yongliang (case study)

Chinese landscape by Yang Yongliang.

This is a series work of Chinese landscape by Yang Yongliang. It is interesting for me that he uses the shape of modern building to set up the

landscape as a ink painting. And the content of his work take about the city remove and change because the development of city. Most of his works are got quite specific points about the influence of economy and politics impact on city. His works inform me that the consideration of my content and new perception to rebuilt Chinese ink painting and landscape.

Installation experiment

I tried to use cotton and small plastic plants to make an ink painting.

This is the work was took under the light.
I played the light and shadow to create a sense of atmosphere and tried to use new way to present traditional painting. Transferred the 2D image into 3D. This work can see from both side with different visions. Image
